Solar Eclipse or Surya Grahan (grahana/ grahanam.The eclispe on January 15, 2010 is an solar annular eclipse of a magnitude of 0.9190. This occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partially obscuring(blocking) Earth's view of the Sun. An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's apparent diameter is smaller than the Sun, causing the sun to look like an annulus (ring), blocking most of the Sun's light. An annular eclipse will appear as partial eclipse over a region thousands of miles wide.
It will be visible as a partial eclipse in much of Africa, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Asia. It will be seen as annular within a narrow stretch of 300 km (190 mi) width across Central Africa, Maldives, South Kerala (India), South Tamil Nadu(India), North Sri Lanka, parts of Burma and parts of China.

About an year ago India had witnessed was a Republic Day solar eclipse, 26 January 2009. Prior to that on 26 August 2008, an eclipse that was visibile in India had occurred. Several traditional practices are associated with solar eclipse in India. Some of them have been written here.

At approx 120pm Indian Std Time (IST) , the annular solar eclipse will be viewable in India at Thiruvananthapuram(Trivandrum), and exits India at Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. The eclipse is can be seen for about 10.4 minutes in India. After Rameswaram, the eclipse moves to Sri Lanka at Delft Island, exits at Jaffna in Sri Lanka, cross Bay of Bengal and ends in Burma - China border.
For best viewing of the Eclipse, you ought to be in Maldives, where manyInternational flights land and take off everyday, being a world famous tourist destination. Visa for Maldives is free for 30 days for a tourist entry.

Solar Eclipse or Surya Grahan (grahana/ grahanam) The longest eclipse of the 21st century will occur on July 22, 2009 and last 6 min 39 sec. The eclipse will be across a narrow corridor from northern Maldives, northern India, eastern Nepal, northern Bangladesh, Bhutan, the northern part of Myanmar, central China and the Pacific Ocean, including the Ryukyu Islands, Marshall Islands and Kiribati.

Total eclipse will be visible in many large Indian cities, including Surat, Vadodara, Bhopal, Varanasi, Patna, Dinajpur, Guwahati, Chengdu, Nanchong, Chongqing, Yichang, Jingzhou, Wuhan, Huanggang, Hefei, Hangzhou, Wuxi, Huzhou, Suzhou, Jiaxing, Ningbo and Shanghai, as well as over the Three Gorges Dam.According to some experts, Taregana in Bihar is apparently the "best" place to view the event.

A partial eclipse will be seen from the much broader path of the Moon's penumbra, including most of Southeast Asia (all of India and China) and north-eastern Oceania.

Total solar eclipse wil lbe visible in India on July 22 from early morning 05:28 hours to 0:40 hours ( Indian standard time). It is expected to last nearly 4 minutes.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee or Atal Behari Vajpayee (Hindi: अटल बिहारी वाजपायी) was the thirteenth and sixteenth Prime Minister of India. (notice that he is never referred to as Atal Vajpayee or Atal B. Vajpayee but always as Atal Bihari Vajpayee or slightly varyingly as Atal Behari Vajpayee).
He was the thirteenth prime minister for thirteen days in May 1996. In 1998, he was sworn-in again as the sixteenth prime minister of India.

Solar Eclipse 26 January 2009, India's RDay
A partial solar eclipse will occur on Monday afternoon when the moon will pass directly between the earth and the sun, according to PTI. The first place to witness the eclipse in India will be Kanyakumari at 1408 hours IST, while it will be visible from 1417 hours IST in Port Blair, the last Indian territory in which the phenomenon will continue till 1625 hours ISTpm.

Known as Surya Grahan ( Surya Grahana/ Surya Grahanam) solar eclipses involve several practices in INdia, some of them steeped in scientific wisdom and some in superstition.

Looking directly at the Sun even for just a few seconds, can cause permanent damage to the retina, because of the intense visible and invisible radiation that Sun's photosphere emits. This damage can result in permanent impairment of vision, and even blindness. The eye's retina has no sensitivity to pain, and the effects of retinal damage may not appear for hours. The best way to observe teh solar eclipse is to watch it on TV or at the local planetaurium. However, pin-hole cameras may also be used depending on the eclipse and the efficiency of the pin-hole cameras.Indian traditions have several beliefs regarding solar eclipse as applicable to food, bath and other rituals that are followed to this day.

Makara Sankranthi - The astronomical significance

Sankramana (Sankranthi) - Makara Sankranthi.January 14 is Makara Sankranthi or Pongal. This article is in commemoration of Lohri / Bhogi, Sankranthi / Pongal. In 2011, some people are celebrating it on 15 January 2011

The point of time when the sun leaves one sign of zodiac (Each sign is also referred as a House or Rashi – Sun’s orbit is depicted as a circle with Earth as centre and the circle is divided into 12 equal parts of 30 degrees each – each segment of 30 degrees being called a House or Rashi – Each house or Rashi has been given a name – names from Mesha, Vrushabha, . . . . Kumbha and Meena) and enters another is called Sankranthi or Sankramana. In other words, Sankramana is said to occur every time sun enters a Rashi. This event is a milestone for Souramana (measure based on movement of Sun). Sankranthi marks the beginning of a Soura month. Each Sankramana is known by the name of the Rashi the Sun is entering. Thus the sankramanas are Mesha Sankramana, Vrushbha Sankramana etc.
Soura Masa (Solar Month)
The period between two successive sankranthi, or the time taken by the sun to pass completely through one sign of the zodiac is called a Soura masa or Solar month. A sankranthi on which a solar month commences takes its name from the sign-name of that month. The Mesha Sankranthi marks vernal equinox, the moment of the sun’s passing the first point of Aries (Mesha).
There are 12 solar months in a year. The Soura months have the same names as that of Rashis. They also have Tamil equivalent names. They are tabulated under the Length of months.
Dakshinayana and Uttharayana Punya kaalas
The Karkataka Sankranthi, three solar months after Mesha sankranthi is called Dakshinayana Punya kaala. The Sun will be directly over Tropic of Cancer (23 ½ degree “N” Latitude) at this time. [Tropic of Cancer passes through India at Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Durgapur etc.] Sun starts its southward movement from this moment. This will normally be on 16th of July.
The Makara Sankranthi, 6 solar months after Karkataka sankranthi, is called Uttharayana Punya kaala. The Sun will be directly over Tropic of Capricorn (23 ½ degree “S” Latitude - it passes through Australia) at this time. Sun starts its northward movement from this moment. This will normally be on 14th of January.
Around the Dakshinayana Punyakaala, 21st of June is called the Summer Solstice meaning the longest day (maximum Dinamana). Around the Uttharayana Punyakaala, 22nd of December is called the Winter Solstice meaning the shortest day (minimum Dinamana). Between the two dates 21st of March is called Vernal (Spring) Equinox and 23rd of September is known as Autumnal Equinox. On these two dates daytime will equal night time [Dinamana will be equal to Rathrimana]. All this is applicable to Earth’s Northern Hemisphere (where India is located).
Ayana
One year consists of two ayanas. Each ayana is spread over six soura masas. Each ayana signifies the sun’s direction. Thus during Dakshinayana, Sun is moving South and during the Uttarayana, Sun is moving North. Ayana can also be understood as passage of Sun to the North and South of the equator.
Karkataka Sankramana marks the beginning of Dakshinayana and Makara Sankramana marks the beginning of Uttarayana.
[Some say: Dakshinayana and Uttharayanas are now commencing on June 21 and December 22 and not on the days of Karkataka / Makara Sankramana. Further, the beginning day of Ayana is moving backwards by about 1 day for every 72 years.]
Around June 21 and December 22, Karkayana and Makarayana occur. These are sankramanas as per Sayana reckoning. As the current value of Ayanamsha is about 22 1/20, Sayana sankramanas are occurring about 23 days earlier than the Nirayana ones. With increasing value of Ayanamsha, Sayana sankramanas will move backwards by about a day every 70 years.
Other Punya Kaalas
Vishuvath Punya kaalas: Mesha and Thula Sankramanas
Vishnupada Punya kaalas: Vrushabha, Simha, Vrushchika and Kumbha Sankramanas.
Shadashiti Punya kaalas: Mithuna, Kanya, Dhanus and Meena Sankramanas.
Punya kaalas / Parva kaalas VarjyaGenerally, no auspicious events are to be celebrated during 16 ghatis before the Punya kaala and 16 ghatis thereafter (1 ghati = 24 minutes), roughly 6 ½ hours on either side. Punya kaalas are also referred as Parva kaalas.
However, for the Dakshinayana / Uttharayana and Vishuvath Punya kaalas, “Pakshini” should be observed. Pakshini means, two nights and a day or two days and a night depending on whether the Punya kaala occurs during day or night (middle of the Pakshini period). Entire Pakshini should be avoided for auspicious events.
Vakya Sankramana
Sages have declared in one sentence (Vakya) the specific time duration between all the Sankramanas (between Mesha and Vrushabha, Vrushabha and Mithuna, etc.) in a year. Sankramanas determined based on this Vakya (sentence) is called Vakya sankramana.
Soorya Siddhantha and Drigganitha sankramanas are determined based on the Soorya Siddhantha and drigganitha systems of calculations of the movement of Sun.
Why different Sankramanas?Sankramana being a point of time can occur at any part of the day. This occurrence during evening / night times makes it difficult to observe the prescribed rituals, say Tharpana. One explanation given is that at least one of the three sankramanas viz. Vakya, Soorya Siddhantha, Drigganitha may occur at a convenient time and that could be followed instead of having extreme difficulties / non observance due to extreme difficulties.
Makara Sankranthi
This marks the beginning of Uttarayana ( a six month period). The Sun will be directly over Tropic of Capricorn (23 ½ degree “S” Latitude - it passes through Australia) at this time. Sun starts its Northward movement from this moment. This will normally be on 14th of January.
Uttarayana is considered auspicious for all events, while the Dakshinayana is banned for many auspicious events like Upanayana, Aksharabhyasa etc. Thus the onset of Uttarayana is celeberated as a festival of joy by one and all.
The day is celeberated by the agricultural community as a Fresh produce day. Fresh produce is used to prepare varieties of food and enjoy. One popular recipe is known as Pongal its chief constituents being Rice, Jaggery or Sugar and Ghee. The festival is also known as Pongal because of its chief use / popularity.
The exact time of Sun’s entry into a Rashi is referred as Punya kala (Auspicious time). Religious observations are prescribed during these punya kalas. Mainly the observation consists of Bathing in Sea / Rivers / Ponds / Wells (in decreasing order of importance), and offering oblutions to the departed souls. These are naturally accompanied with a period of fasting.
There is a saying that the one who does not bathe during a punyakala will suffer with diseases during seven generations. Persons who have last their parents have to perform shraddha. Persons who give danas, will enjoy the same items (whatever is given as dana) during their next birth. During Makara Sankranthi usage and give away of Til (Ellu) is given lot of prominence. Ellu as such is not normally received by anybody. Therefore preparations of different varieties of sweets using Ellu are made and used and given away. This is common across the whole of India – sweets being of their own region.
Danas (give aways) are another important prescription. The prescribed items of dana are: During Mesha sankramana – Goat, Vrushabha sankramana – Cow, Mithuna – Food and clothes, Karkataka – Ghee and Milk, Simha – Umbrella and gold, Kanya – Household articles, Thula – Til (Ellu) nad Milk products – Milk, Curds and Ghee, Vrushchika –Light, Dhanus – Clothes and Vehicles, Makara – Firewood and Agni (Fire), Kumbha – Cow, Water and Fodder AND Meena – Land, Garland of flowers etc.
Based on the exact time of Sankramana, the characteristics of Sankranthi purusha ( an imaginary character representing the Sankranthi) are drawn up. These characteristics indicate the general picture for the ensuing year from the sankramana. Makara Sankranthi purusha lakshana is believed to be the dominating characteristics for the whole year.

The scandal at Satyam Computer Services Ltd (NYSE:SAY) ( ironically, Satyam means 'Truth') has put under the scanner the role of the auditors at Satyam- PricewaterhouseCoopers or PwC.

The New York Stock Exchange-listed Satyam's strenght lies in Enterprise Application Services like SAP, Oracle etc. Satyam had a BPO which was initially named Nipuna.

ICAI will seek an immediate explanation from Satyam Computer’s auditors, PriceWaterHouse Cooper (PwC), on the financial fraud unearthed by the software company’s chairman B Ramalinga Raju, before taking any action.

To the Board of Directors,Satyam Computer Services Ltd.

Dear Board Members, It is with deep regret, at tremendous burden that I am carrying on my conscience, that I would like to bring the following facts to your notice:
The Balance Sheet carries as of September 30, 2008
Inflated (non-existent) cash and bank balances of Rs.5,040 crore (as against Rs. 5361 crore reflected in the books)
An accrued interest of Rs. 376 crore which is non-existent
An understated liability of Rs. 1,230 crore on account of funds arranged by me
An over stated debtors position of Rs. 490 crore (as against Rs. 2651 [cr.] reflected in the books)
For the September quarter (02) we reported a revenue of Rs.2,700 crore and an operating margin of Rs. 649 crore (24% Of revenues) as against the actual revenues of Rs. 2,112 crore and an actual operating margin of Rs. 61 Crore ( 3% of revenues). This has resulted in artificial, cash and bank balances going up by Rs. 588 crore in Q2 alone.
The gap in the Balance Sheet has arisen purely on account of inflated profits over a period of last several years (limited only to Satyam standalone, books of subsidiaries reflecting true performance). What started as a marginal gap between actual operating profit and the one reflected in the books of accounts continued to grow over the years. It has attained unmanageable proportions as the size of company operations grew significantly (annualized revenue run rate of Rs. 11,276 crore in the September quarter, 2008 and official reserves of Rs. 8,392 crore). The differential in the real profits and the one reflected in the books was further accentuated by the fact that the company had to carry additional resources and assets to justify higher level of operations — thereby significantly increasing the costs.
Every attempt made to eliminate the gap failed. As the promoters held a small percentage of equity, the concern was that poor performance would result in a take-over; thereby exposing the gap. It was like riding a tiger, not knowing how to get off without being eaten.
The aborted Maytas acquisition deal was the last attempt to fill the fictitious assets with real ones. Maytas’ investors were convinced that this is a good divestment opportunity and a strategic fit. Once Satyam’s problem was solved, it was hoped that Maytas’ payments can be delayed. But that was not to be. What followed in the last several days is common knowledge.
I would like the Board to know:
1. That neither myself, nor the Managing Director (including our spouses) sold any shares in the last eight years — excepting for a small proportion declared and sold for philanthropic purposes.
2. That in the last two years a net amount of Rs. 1,230 crore was arranged to Satyam (not reflected in the books of Satyam) to keep the operations going by resorting to pledging all the promoter shares and raising funds from known sources by giving all kinds of assurances (Statement enclosed, only to the members of the board). Significant dividend payments, acquisitions, capital expenditure to provide for growth did not help matters. Every attempt was made to keep the wheel moving and to ensure prompt payment of salaries to the associates. The last straw was the selling of most of the pledged share[s] by the lenders on account of margin triggers.
3. That neither me, nor the Managing Director took even one rupee/dollar from the company and have not benefited in financial terms on account of the inflated results.
4. None of the board members, past or present, had any knowledge of the situation in which the company is placed. Even business leaders and senior executives in the company, such as, Ram Mynampati, Subu D, T.R. Anand, Keshab Panda, Virender Agarwal, A.S. Murthy, Han T, SV Krishnan, Vijay Prasad, Manish Mehta, Murali V. Sriram Papani, Kavale, Joe Lagioia, Ravindra Penumetsa, Jayaraman and Prabhakar Gupta are unaware of the real situation as against the books of accounts. None of my or Managing Director’s immediate or extended family members has any idea about these issues.
Having put these facts before you, I leave it to the wisdom of the board to take the matters forward. However, I am also taking the liberty to recommend the following steps:
1. A Task Force has been formed in the last few days to address the situation arising but of the failed Maytas acquisition attempt. This consists of some of the most accomplished leaders of Satyam; Subu D, T.R. Anand, Keshab Panda and Virender Agarwal , representing business functions; and A.S. Murthy, Han T and Murali V representing support functions. I suggest that Ram Mynampàti be made the Chairman of this Task Force to immediately address some of the operational matters on hand. Ram can also act as an interim CEO reporting to the board.
2. Merrill Lynch can be entrusted with the task of quickly exploring some Merger opportunities.
3. You may have a testatement of accounts’ prepared by the auditors in light of the facts that.I have placed before you.
I have promoted and have been associated with Satyam for well over twenty years now I have seen it grow from few people to 53,000 people, with 185 Fortune 500 companies as customers and operations in 66 countries. Satyam has established an excellent leadership and competency base at all levels. I sincerely apologize to all Satyamites and stakeholders, who have made Satyam a special organization, for the current situation. I am confident they will stand by the company in this hour of crisis.
In light of the above, I fervently appeal to the board to hold together to take some important steps Mr T R Prasad is well placed to mobilize support from the government at this crucial time. With the hope that members of the Task Force arid the financial advisor, Merrill Lynch (now Bank of America) will stand by the company at this crucial hour, I am marking copies of this statement to them as well.
Under the circumstances, I am tendering my resignation as the chairman of Satyam and shall continue in this position only till such time the current board is expanded. My continuance is just to ensure enhancement of the board over the next several days or as early as possible.
I am now prepared to subject myself to the laws of the land and face consequences thereof.

Whether the terrorists are foreigners are not, the answer to the question of local assistance to the foregin terrorists is yet to be answered the 24 hour News Channel like NDTV, CNN-IBN, Times Now and Headlines Today are clearly playing an anti-national role.This morning the news channels beamed live footage of NSG commandos being airdropped on the attacked building. Any terrorist inside the building had the enormous advantage of knowing how many commandos were entering and from which position. This was a very specific example. Right from announcing when NSG forces arrived to the number of security forces, the news channels are doing all, in utmost competitive vigour, that they can to keep updated the terrorists inside the attacked building and their accomplices in the outside world with whom the attackers might have possibly maintained contact.The sheer pressure for eye-balls and rivalry amongst news channels is sabotaging the already fragile national security scene. It took all of 40 hours since the first pictures for the Army to 'request' news channels to not beam live pictures. A more powerful government would have ordered the eviction of news channels.News Channels have their utility of sending messages about the hurt, the missing and the stranded and they should just stick to that. Even if the capture of the attackers is delayed by as much as a minute on account of the advantage that the news channels give them, the news channels are playing an anti-national, pro-terrorist role ( even during peace time, this writer is of the view that several news anchors play a divisive anti-national role)Is the government so weak that they cannot control media in times like these ?

Repechage Round - and What it means ?

Repechage (Origin French: repêchage, lit. re-fishing), meaning "to rescue" or "to save", is a practice in knock-out or elimination contests that allows who failed to meet qualifying standards by a small margin to continue on to the next round.
To understand this better, in track field athletics, automatic qualification for the next round is given to the best competitors in each heat. Other competitors with the best times may also qualify for the next round indirectly as "fastest losers" as a result of the repechage. If a particular heat was significantly faster than the others, the repechage spots can be all taken by athletes from that heat. In field athletics, automatic qualification for the next round depends on meeting or surpassing a specified minimum result. The remaining qualification spots (if any) are given in order to the best results.

In karate, judo, taekwondo, and wrestling tournaments, single elimination brackets are used to determine the two athletes who will compete in the final match for first and second place. The repechage bracket is built by selecting all of the athletes who were knocked out by the finalists and building brackets to determine third place. Repechage addresses the possibility of two top competitors meeting in an early round, allowing the loser a chance to compete for a bronze medal. This is exactly what happened to Sushil Kumar at Beijing on 20th August 2008 at the Olympic Games.

In fact, earlier in the day Reuters has reported Sushil's elimination and how medal hopes rested on the repechage. Sushil came up with an incredible show, beating Doug Schwab (3-1) of the United States, Albert Batyrov (3-1) of Belarus and, finally, the losing semi-finalist, Leonid Spiridonov of Kazakhstan in the repechage rounds - all under an hour-to earn his slice of history. Repechage is especially common in Sailing. Sushil went on to othe second Indian wrestler after Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav, who won a bronze in the 1952 Helsinki Games, to win an Olympic medal. One wonders whether Jadhav too had won the bronze on the repechage.

Wrestler Sushil Kumar wins Olympic bronze medal for India taking India's tally of medals in the Beijing 2008 Olympics ( बीजिंग २००८ ) to 2.

Sushil Kumar contested in the 66kg Freestyle Wrestling at Beijing Olympics and beat Spiridonov of Kazhakastan in the bronze medal bout. The Indian boxer gained access to the bronze medal round thru the repecharge round even though he lost in the first round. The Last time an Indian Wrestler won a medal was when K D Yadav won the bronze medal in Wrestling in 1952 Olympic Games Helsinki

The earlier medal was won by Abhinav Bindra- gold in shooting. As India is celebrating, it is awaiting the Kumar boxers' bout for a place in the semi-finals in Boxing.

After all the controversy over Rajnikant's remark on Kannadigas in the context of the Hogenakal issue, subsequent protests and the threat that Kuselan will not be allowed to be screened in Karnataka and the Rajnikant's graceful apology over the incident. KRV's spokesperson has said Rajnikant has shown grace and his increased his persona by apologising. Now, Kuselan and Kathanayakudu is all set of release in Bangalore, Mysore and other parts of Karnataka.

Reviews of the movie are most welcome in the comments section or just mention if you like Rajni's style or Nayantara's costumes, the storyline or the song picturisation.

Solar Eclipse - some practices from India

IN continuation of the previous post on the solar eclipse ( Surya grahan in India - grahana in South India) due to occur on 1st August 2008, this post is regarding some common practices in India during an eclipse.
One does not eat during the eclipse. In fact, it is a belief that the food one has consumed must be digested before the eclipse begins. Hence, it is recommended to eat 4 hours before the start of the eclipse.
Once the eclipse is over, one takes a complete bath. Food cooked before the eclipse should not be consumed during the eclipse but food should be cooked afresh.
Some of these practices have no sanction from modern science as we know it today, but then science as we know it today does not explain everything does it ?

Friday, the first of August 2008 will be a day of total solar eclipse. It will be visible totally in parts of Russia, Mongolia and China. The solar eclipse will be partial in parts of North America, Europe and Asia including India.

In India, The eclipse will begin at 1.34 p.m when the shadow of the moon will first touch the earth and will end at 6.08 p.m. when the moon's shadow leaves the earth at sunset near a point in the Bay of Bengal close to Andaman Nicobar Islands.

A solar eclipse is a celestial phenomenon that occurs when the Earth's moon passes between the sun and the earth in such a way that the Sun is wholly or partially obscured from view from the earth. This happens only during a new moon day ( Amavasya in Indian languages), when the Sun and Moon are in conjunction as seen from the Earth. There can be between 2 and 5 solar eclipses each year on Earth, with upto 2 of them being total eclipses. Total solar eclipses are however rare at any location because during each eclipse totality exists only along a narrow corridor in the relatively tiny area of the Moon's umbra.

Looking directly at the Sun even for just a few seconds, can cause permanent damage to the retina, because of the intense visible and invisible radiation that Sun's photosphere emits. This damage can result in permanent impairment of vision, and even blindness. The eye's retina has no sensitivity to pain, and the effects of retinal damage may not appear for hours. The best way to observe teh solar eclipse is to watch it on TV or at the local planetaurium. However, pin-hole cameras may also be used depending on the eclipse and the efficiency of the pin-hole cameras.
Indian traditions have several beliefs regarding solar eclipse as applicable to food, bath and other rituals that are followed to this day.

Results for the PE2 examination of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India is expected to be declared on 30th July 2008 Wednesday. PE 2 or Professional Education II -[Professional Competence Examination] exam was conducted during May 2008 .

Helen Beatrix Potter (July 1866 – December 1943) was a British author. APrat from being an author, Potter was also an illustrator, conservationist and mycologist, A writer of Children's books, which featured animal characters most famous amongst them - Peter Rabbit.

Beatrix Potter was born on the 28th of July 1986 ( exactly the same date today) in South Kensington, London.

Potter eventually published 23 children's books which were translated in many many languages. Her most famous work was the 'THE TALE OF PETER RABBIT'.

Potter died in 1943, and bequeathing her estate to The National Trust so as to preserve the beauty of the Lake District.

Reports of serial blasts in Bangalore are fast coming in.

according to Kannada news channels (ETV Kannada, Suvarana, Udaya etc) there have been 6 serial bomb blasts in the city. Timer-based bombs exploded in Madivala, Nayandahalli ( on Mysore Road),Langsford Road, Richmond Road and other places.

There has been atleast one fatality and two people seriously injured.

Lok Sabha, the Indian Parliamentary Lower House votes today to climax a month of hectic political parleying.
Almost all the TV News Channels are covering Parliament, beaming Live images of the debate on the motion from Lok Sabha, New Delhi. Yesterday External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Leader of the Opposition Lal Krishna Advani spoke passionately and today Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav and 'Crown-prince' Rahul Gandhi, son of the Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi & former Prime Minister Late Rajiv Gandhi and Finance Minsiter P. Chidambaram are expected to speak.
It seems like a sudden death- the vote could swing either way. In case of a tie it will be the Speaker will have a casting. Television Channels like NDTV Live, CNN IBN, Star News, ZEE News, DD News, TV9 glued to the political developments 24 x7 .

If there are experts who can talk in a simple language on DD, NDTV, AAj Tak, Star News, ZEE News, CNN IBM, BBC, then maybe the common man can form an opinion.

The motion will be put to vote after the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will reply to the debate. The penultimate speaker will be the Leader of the Opposition. The vote is scheduled to be taken at 6pm but past history of such confidence motions are that it might end well past midnight.

In case someone wants to make corrections he can do based on instrucitions in the website.

Ajanta Mendis ( not Ajantha Mendis). Ajanta's full name is Balapuwaduge Ajantha Winslo Mendis. 23 year old Ajanta was born on 11th March 1985 in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. Apart from the National team of Sri Lanka, Ajanta has also played for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL Twenty20, Sri Lanka Army, Wayamba.

His Batting style is Right-hand bat and more importantly his Bowling style Right-arm slow-medium ( and this description hardly does justice to his bowling style) .

Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw ( full name : Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw) died late yesterday, the 27 June 2008. He was ailing in the Wellington Hospital in Tamil Nadu for sometime now.

The Field Marshal, one of the only 2 India has had led the Indian Defence against Pakistan in 1971 and brought victory. He is a Padma Vibhushan and Military Cross awardee. The last President Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam had visited Sam Manekshaw in hospital in 2007.

May his soul rest in peace.
