Periyar University was created on 17 July 1997 (119th Birth Anniversary of the "great rationalist", Periyar E.V. Ramasamy Naciker) under the provisions of a legisation passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in the name of Periyar a great social reformer inTamil Nadu. The University was created to address the educational needs of the people in southern districts of Tamil Nadu especially Salem, Namakkal and Dharmapuri districts. The named districts were considered backward by the Government.

The Periyar University's motto is “Arival Vilaium Ulagu” ( Wisdom Maketh World ) and hence its mission is to develop value-based knowledge ina a variety of discipline. Further they believe that this will lead to uplifting the socially, economically and educationally backward people in particular.. Periyar University has introduced area specific courses on thrust areas considering the needs and expectations of the society and industry. It contemplates introduction of toher new demand-driven courses and expand teaching, research, training, consultancy and extension activities.

The NAAC rating of the Institution is B+
