Varalakshmi Pooja or Varamahalakshmi Pooje: August 15, 2008. This pooja, performed by ladies of the housedhold, falls on August 15 this year - 2008.
Women observe fast (Vratha) and perform Pooja to Goddess Mahalakshmi.
In Tamil Nadu, Tuesdays and Fridays in the month of Aadi are considered auspicious. Lighting lamps, doing chanting the name of Goddess Lakshmi are believed to alliviate the sufferings in life. Karya siddhi or success in work undertaken, General happiness are supposed to be the Goddess' blessing.
Since, in Tamil Nadu the month of Aadi is considered inauspicious for other ceremonies, shopping is generally low. To beat this malls and retailers have hit upon the idea of Aadi discounts and change the perception that while the month is inauspicious for ceremonies, shopping in anticipation of the ceremonies is OK.
