Paul WS Anderson's movie Death Race is a take on the Roger Corman 1970s science fiction action movie of a similar name Death Race 2000.
Anderson's Death Race is not a frame-to-frame remake of Death Race 2000 and he has indeed changed the details of the plot. The plot, I hear, appears to be that convicts are allowed to race with the winner being freed.
